music machinery, verbal wizardry

About 10 people just took over the living ten minutes ago for Caitlin's filming,  so now I'm holed up in my bedroom with the door closed. Oh hermit.

Yesterday I surprised Hunter and took him to the Sam Adams Brewery.  By "surprised," I mean that he guessed it as soon as I told him we needed to go to Sullivan Sq. Station.  By "took him" I mean that I came up with idea.  The tour was free. I spoil my man.

Anyway, they crowded a ton of us into a room and showed us a video.  And then they told us about hops and barley and had us taste/smell each. Then they showed us the big vats they make the beer in and blah blah blah, finally we got to taste it.  We were all jammed into the tasting room, and they pasted around pitchers of the lager, summer, and hardcore cider.  Each person got their own little 7oz glass to taste from and they gave us instructions on how to "taste" a beer.  Then things started to get rowdy.. there was a group of young Spanish tourists that, after one beer, began various chants at their table.  Once they were done, everyone would clap and cheer.  It got so loud in there that other employees came in to see what was going on.  Pretty nuts for 1 in the afternoon.

Here's the owner of Samuel Adams.  He has the best job ever.  He has pictures of him drinking beer with famous people like Brad Pitt and Michael Dukakis.

On our way back, we saw a gas station that said this:

I'm not sure who Stan is.

We met up with some people later in the evening, and Pete and Cat (and eventually Adam) came over to my place so that the boys could watch basketball. We also decided to watch SNL for the first time in years, which was of course terrible. We also discussed the possibility of going to Maine this weekend, if all goes as planned.

The poster version of our Whores in Love? photoshoot is done. They're going to rip it up as they're filming today. It's pretty funny..

Proof that spring is mostly here:

The city of Boston has woken from its wintery slumber and everyone, I mean EVERYONE is out and about. Last night Laura and I wandered around aimlessly looking for a place to eat in Harvard. Shay's patio was spilling out onto the sidewalk and there were lines practically everywhere else (note to self: open restaurant with huge patio and good beer selection for ultimate dollars.) We settled on Grendal's Den where we shared some dinner and I got to try out Magic Hat's Summer Odd Notion. Loved it.. dark beer that wasn't too heavy and had lots of flavor.

Today I took the 87 to the Cambridge Antique Market, which is five floors of pretty much anything you (or in this case, I) could want. I spent about two hours looking through the different booths. A good amount of the items were a bit over-priced but I managed to pick up a few things, including this vintage hat/headband that is a little strange but I figure I could just wear it and eventually it wouldn't seem so strange:

I also picked up this strapless, slightly 80's, cotton dress:

I kept my eyes peeled for a summer 2008 onesie, but didn't see one. I have no doubt that one will magically appear for me at some flea market or thrift store. It's just not summer without one.

After the antique market, I jumped on the T out to Allston. Lucky me, there was a baseball game AND a Bruins game. Baseball season is hell on earth for public transportation, but it is sorta cute when the T driver gets on the intercom and asks how people are doing and if they're excited about the game and everyone cheers.

I met up with Laura and we grabbed a slice (oh how I miss living by Upper Crust!) and stopped by Brookline Booksmith, where I bought Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City. I really loved Thunderstruck, and The Devil.. is supposed to be his best. The book, like Thunderstruck, tells the story of two men and how their lives intersect, this time at the World's Fair in Chicago.

After, we went and saw Young@Heart, which just opened this weekend. It's a documentary about the elderly chorus from Northampton called (duh) Young@Heart. It follows the group as they prepare for an upcoming performance.. Pretty heartwarming + heartbreaking. Even though it had me in tears several times, I'm glad I got to see it... Amazing to see people do such incredible things, even late in life.

Thought about going after that, but ended up watching some Flight of the Concords and coming home. I still am not sold on that show. Maybe without the singing I would like it?

It's late and I should sleep, but that damn book is calling me..

It's late and I should be in bed, but...

One of the first projects I've worked on finally launched today... I was at work until 8 making sure everything worked and looked right.. There's a few minor adjustments that still need to be made, but all in all, look, woo! I did something that you can look at!

After I got out, I went to Harvard Square to meet up with Cat and Andrea at Shay's for some beers and dinner.. We then mosied on to Charlie's for a couple more beers and loud conversations. It ended up being a late night, but sometimes it's needed.

Today is my dear friend Tricia's birthday, who texted me that she was in a limo on the way to the airport for a trip to Belize. She called me back and to my delight, I got to talk to the whole Sweeney family.. They were my second family through high school so it was good to hear their voices and offers to host me out at Lake Cushman, I don't even remember the last time I was on a jet ski at that lake, but I miss it.. ohhh how I miss it. I miss the campfires and the heart to hearts and the sunburns and camper and everything else. Some day.. SOME DAY, I will make it back, and it will be glorious.

The Jamaica tix have been purchased! June 13th-18th in Montego Bay at the Half Moon Villas, which sorta look like heaven on earth.

I'm not sure I'm going to want to come back. Ever.

What else have I been doing?

Saw Throw Me the Statue. They were good. Not mindblowing, but good. It was an entertaining evening overall.

Went to a BBQ at Nate and Hunter's. Rode a bicycle for the first time in years (need to buy one!)

Planted some flower seeds on our porch, which I haven't watered since. I cleaned off the whole thing and had visions of putting out a little table for summer-time breakfast eating, but that may have to wait. I love our little porch, no matter how dangerous and unstable it may be. Next step: buying a BBQ for the backyard and filling up the birdfeeder.

On Sunday Cat and Andrea came over so that we could go to a clothing swap in Somerville.. Unfortunately, the address was in my inbox on lemmingtrail, which was down.. So we ended up swapping clothes in my living room. I managed to get rid of a bunch of stuff that I've been hating and acquire such gems as a lemon yellow fake gucci purse, a cropped blouse with european (?) ladies on it, a peach pleated skirt and a striped teal 80's dress. I sorta hate all of my clothes right now. I want to throw them out and start again. Where is my thousands of free dollars, dammit!!

Also on Sunday, Caitlin convinced Jon and I to pose for a photo shoot. The photo is going to be made into a poster for a movie called "Whores in Love?" which will be a part in another movie she's filming... Basically the movie poster will be on the wall for the movie. It sounds confusing. Anyway, I got to dress like a prostitute and pretend I was in love with Jon. Gee aren't we awkward.

The Beer Advocate is throwing another beer fest.. this one celebrating American craft beers. There are NO beers from WA, which is sorta disheartening (Boundary Bay? Hello??) but Hunter and I plan to go anyway. I'm praying that somehow the amazing belgium waffle people will be there again, cause that was one of the best things about the Belgium Beer fest.. but with my luck they'll just have like hotdogs and popcorn. Real American food..

Check out my friend's blogs.. Roommate Jon writes about his life in boston here.

And even though it only has one post, Melissa's blog is hilarrrrrious so far.

Did I mention that Mel and Sean are moving to Chicago? It's by no means close, but it's a lot closer than Seattle! Hopefully I can convince them to take many trips to visit. And now I will have a reason to visit Chicago.. if they will have me! I wonder how Bird Noir is gonna handle that traveling..

I think that's about it for me. It's almost the weekend and tomorrow is supposed to be in the 70's. Spring is here. Holy shizz.

I am typing while eating a French chocolate bar called Flake. Flakey chocolate and a white computer probably don't mix.

Hunter made it back last night, in the midst of one of the weirdest im conversations I've had.. with Hunter's im. At some point in Paris, he had gone to an internet cafe and signed into aim there.. Apparently, the computer saved his password, because there were several times that he was signed in while he was supposed to be flying on a plane or out to dinner.. it was strange.

me: Can i ask you something?
him: go ahead
me: why are you using my boyfriend's im name?
him: why not
me: well.. because it's his?
me: how did you get it?
him: you dont have to know
me: are you in an internet cafe?
me: i'm assuming that's it
him: not really
me: you're not really in an internet cafe?
him: i'm drunk
him: in my friend's house
me: ok..

It went on like that for a while. He said he was in St Michel in Paris and was 28 and an art designer. He wouldn't tell me his name. Hunter managed to get home and change his password and discovered that the guy had also posted something on craigslist looking for ladies.

So yes, he made it back in one piece.. pretty wiped out, so I haven't heard all of the details yet. He brought me back french soap from his mom (on an adorable French Cherie plate in a canvas bag with my sign's (libra) characteristics, which of course are charming, romantic, balanced and sociable.) He also picked me out a pear-shaped murano glass pendant. Loryn had sent me murano glass from Italy a long time ago when she lived there, but I lost it. This is a completely different shape and style.. different specks of colored glass laid in a silver material.

I think perhaps I need to go to Europe.

Looks like I will be going to Montego Bay, Jamaica in June... I forget the name of the place we're staying, but it's absolutely gorgeous.. and even though it means that I'm going to REALLY wip my ass into bikini shape, going to Jam is gonna be incredible. There's nothing I love more than laying around on a beach all day.

Spring is almost here.. I saw buds on the trees on my way home. I bought some forget-me-nots and alyssum to plant in the pots on our porch. I've never tried to plant flowers before, so we'll see how this goes..

I've been downloading all sorts of music in the last day.. Lykke Li (so good,) Futureheads, The Kooks, Cut Copy, Jonathan Richman and tons more. Feel good to be back!

I woke up from a bad dream at 8:30ish this morning and rather than follow my instinct and flop back over into sleep, I remember "OH SHIT, NEW TOY!"

Yes, the Macbook has finally arrived in all its pristine white glory. When the Fedex guy walked into the office, he asked why I was making weird eyes at him. Sir, the eyes were for the computer.. ohhh the computer.

I've already videochatted with Doug and played too much with photobooth and starting stealing music from the internet and look! I am blogging!

Here is a picture of me looking a little busted this morning but wrapped in my newish comforter (thanks Martha Stuart!) and staring creepily at you.

Last night I went out to ye olde Paradise with Laura, Gabby and Matthew to see The Honeydrips and Jens Lekman. I enjoyed The Honeydrips (or as it was, one dude who looked suspiciously like someone I'd seen singing to himself with a pizza box on the bus to Allston) but wasn't motivated to buy any music.. and what I've downloaded today was only so-so.. Anyway, Mr Lekman came out... no matching uniforms this time, only a key on a string that they each wore. And no horns section (sad.) All in all it was a good show, but I do wish he would change up the setlist a bit more.. And no matter how sincere he might sound, I suspect that last night's show was "special" just like every Jens Lekman show is "special." Anyway, I might be able to do with seeing him that last time and the time before at PA's.. I dont know if he can much better than that. REGARDLESS, it was a good time.

Afterwards Laura and I walked back towards her place and got a slice.. I waited for the bus for a while but then worried I would be waiting all night, so I jumped in a cab. The cab driver was wicked chatty... He asked me about my night and introduced himself and shook my hand. His name was Jamal. I told him my name was Jennifer. I enjoy chatting with cabbies SOMETIMES, but man.. just get me to Harvard Sq already!

Anyway.. it's the weekend, so I'd better go weekend it. My bedroom is a neverending disaster. I'm going to a clothing swap next week so I need to take this "getting rid of stuff" thing a little more seriously.
