Punk Rock Flea Market

I bought a bunch of stuff.

glass heart necklace:

necklace with handwoven gold basket filled with swarovski crystals (dude also made AMAZING but expensive hand-woven sweaters. He was nuts):

seafoam green/blue dress with gold button belt. polyster. cuuutee:

Dress that makes me feel like Liezel from Sound of Music (will wear on summertime picnic):

Also bought a rose penant/locket that i forgot to take a pic of. It needs a chain. I bought a couple other things as I have some friends with birthdays coming up very soon. Apparently everyone was born in May. Anyway, I can't post pics of those for obvious reasons.

The worst thing about the party last night was the cops coming when I was only 5 or 6 people away from the bathroom.

The best thing was the free beer.

Everything else was pretty meh, except for the orderly way everyone left once it got busted. All of us mid to late twenty-year-olds were probably looking for an excuse to go home without looking lame anyway. Thank you Brighton Police!

Punk Rock Flea Market today. Ooo Ooo Ooo.

Janell, Caitlin and I went apartment hunting today. It took about 4 hours to look at 6 places. The first hour was spent waiting for the realty guy to show up and then, finding out that the one he was supposed to show us had been rented, looking up some other options. So off we went....

#1 3br duplex in JP
Even though this was unappealing from the outside (well and the backyard,) the inside wasn't bad.. big kitchen, nice living room.. okay sized bedrooms, two of which had porches (plus one additional on the first floor.) Then the tenants came home and told us the reason they were moving out was cause they had the worst landlords ever. Heat shut off, broken fridge/stove etc. Thanks but no thanks!

#2 3-4 br on Linden St.
Ummm.. awkward kitchen with virtually no counterspace, weird long hallways and no living room. I think this was the place that had windew hanging from the light fixture so that you could turn it on. Sketchy location. No thanks.

#3 3br on Ashford
Entryway smelled like piss. Weird corner kitchen. Shared balconey (which had a B.B. gun on it. Lazy dirty college boys slacking away. No dining area. Ugh.

#4 3+ br on Linden St.
Nice kitchen, okay bedrooms.. Living room with no windows. Weird lady with a dog. Not too bad but the area was surrounded by trash. Too close to the highway. Ehhhh.

#5 3br in Brighton
Good sized bedrooms, no dining area, lousy kitchen, far away from everything, ugly carpet, new bathroom. Getting a little better.

#6 3br in Oak Square
Nice entryway, huge bedrooms, big kitchen, back porch area, washer/dryer, nicely painted, big closets. Bus stop right next door, YMCA down the street.. Very promising.

Brighton isn't my ideal location, but this apartment was pretty damn incredible, especially for the price.. Not sure everyone is agreed about it, but man, it looks like it would be nice and homey with plenty of room for cooking and whatnot. Definite possibility.

I'm pretty exhausted from running around today. There's a big ol' party happening in Brighton tonight but it's hard to get out when it's rainy and dark and my body really wants to sleeep... agh.

Check out Darin and Greg in the New York Daily News!

The Teeth

Dr. Dog

There's more pics from the show here

I haven't seen Dr. Dog play anywhere besides CMJ and Boston, but I'm pretty convinced that Boston has the craziest Dr. Dog fans ever. We're talking spirited singalongs, fist pumps and sunglasses. It was great. Everything is great. I am great. You are great. It's Friday, which is great.

It's raining out, that is not so great.

I was told I need to update this more. SURE UNIVERSE, I WILL JUST UPDATE WHENEVER SO THAT YOU HAVE MORE THINGS TO LOOK AT ON THE INTERNET.

I did something really stupid today. One of those things that only stupid people do. I ordered food from one thai place and went to pick it up at another, thinking they were the same one. They of course didn't have my order and I just stood there as the reality washed over me. It wouldn't have been that bad if Hunter hadn't been standing right there witnessing it all. So I once again embarassed myself in front of the person I want to impress and can only feel better about the whole thing by writing it here and being like "hahaha oh aren't i stupid."

Major bummer: Tsunami in Brookline is no longer BYOP unless you want to pay a $10 cork fee. Which I guess is still cheaper in the long run, but still, I will miss standing outside that tiny place clutching a bottle of Trader Joe wine and waiting for a table. It's the end of an era! Thank god I have their incredible sweet potato roll to comfort me.

Hunter and I also saw Hot Fuzz last night, which was great except sushi + wine + charleston chews + late start time= incredible sleepiness. I nodded off briefly at least twice, but despite of that, still thought the movie was funny and entertaining.

I wish I could feed my teddybear pancakes:

Tonight is the highly anticipated Teeth/Dr. Dog show where I see if I can match the incredible geeky freak out that happened when I saw The Teeth in Austin. It was one of those "OMG I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO HAPPY MAYBE IT IS THE HABANA MOJITOS OR MAYBE THIS BAND IS JUST MAGICAL" type things.

At least once a week like clockwork:

Airplanes
To see an airplane in your dream, indicates that you will overcome your obstacles and rise above to a new level of prominence and status. You may experience a higher consciousness, new-found freedom and greater awareness.

Flying
To dream that you are flying, signifies a sense of freedom where you had initially felt restricted and limited.

By the way, I have a show coming up in like, less than a week. I have no flyer for it because I am the worst person ever..

Team Courage presents...

May 1, 2007
Suburban Kids with Biblical Names
The Living Blue
This Car Up

Great Scott
9pm $8 18+

Despite my severe lack of organization with this one, it's gonna be good. I swear.

Caitlin, Janell and I looked at the first of what I'm sure will be an endless string of potential apartments. It was flamingo pink, which was a bonus, but the kitchen wasn't that impressive and it didn't have closets. Since I plan to increase my arsenal of clothing in the next year, I need a big closet.

I'm supposed to finally record my first show for RadioYou next week.. which is going to be hard to fit in with the Great Scott show and BEN KING FINALLY ARRIVING. I haven't decided how I'm going to structure the show yet. I thought about having a loose theme, but that seems a little hokey. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I spent approximately 5.5 hours on the patio at Great Scott today. 5.5 hours drinking beers and eating food and playing Scrabble and shooting the shit and it was fucking great. It was Allston's official greeting to Spring 2007. It's here. 70 degree weather is here. Finaalllly.

Do yourself a favor and buy Boxer, the new record from The National when it comes out.

I miss Nika.

I got remixed

I get to see Dr. Dog/ The Teeth this week. I am probably gonna by tix to NC this week.

But for now, I smell like a carcoal grill and I need to get some sleep.

More soon, I swear.

Kashmir

As I grow older, it's important for me to re-try things that I thought that I hated. I still don't like jello or cough syrup, but maybe, just maybe, Indian food ain't that bad.

The special occasion was the arrival of Garrison, one of Hunter's (several) younger brothers. He's in town for the weekend so his bro is trying to take him to all the the exciting things there are to enjoy in Boston if you're 16. By the way, Boston pretty much blows if you're under 21 and it only slightly better if you're 18+.

We made reservations at Kashmir, an atmospheric Indian restaurant tucked below Newbury Street.

Kashmir Vegetarian Platter Assorted combination of Vegetable Pakoras, Samosa, Tikki and Cheese Pakoras (served with a trio of chutneys)

Garlic Naan Unleavened, handmade bread stuffed with fresh garlic

Poori (2) Whole wheat, deep fried puffed bread

Malai Kofta Vegetable balls cooked in a creamy nut sauce with fresh herbs and spices

Tandoori Rack of Lamb Rack of Lamb marinated in yogurt and exotic spices, succulent and tender from our clay oven

H&G shared something else but I can't remember the name of it.. and our meal was served with Basmati rice.

The appetizers and breads were great and I couldn't get enough of the mint chutney. My entree was good, but I don't know if I'd order it again. The tomato sauce was rich and creamy, but tasted a little too familiar. Luckily they have a fairly good vegetarian selection, so I have many other options to try.

Indian food=not so bad.. so I guess I gotta swallow my pride on this one. Oh well.

For the last few days (it seems) I've been doing the following:

1. Come home from work.
2. Turn on HGTV.
3. Stare at Microsoft Word.
4. Stare at Microsoft Word.
5. Learn what makes a house valuable.
6. Stare at Microsoft Word.

But some good has come out of this, as I now have several documents titled Bethany J. Pickard _________. And whenever I buy my first house, I'm sure it's gonna be f---ing incredible.

2004?!?!?!

On June 16th, I will have lived in Boston for 3 years. That's pretty funny. I'm pretty funny. You're pretty funny.

It's a local music explosion this week. Tuesday was the Rumble with two bands I missed, Protokoll and Age Rings. Protokoll was the predicted winner and took home the prize, but I have a very sneaking suspicion that we'll be seeing AR in the semis.

Last night The Phoenix had a party at the Paradise for their Best Music Poll, so we got to go and eat some free Qdoba nachos (build your own! woo!), Soco and Budweiser. Pretty good time but we left early and while I fully intended to go down and celebrity-gawk David Arquette and see So Many Dynamos, it was too cold and rainy.

Hunter's leaving for NC tomorrow for a few days so I'm gonna be slightly alone this weekend... Still not sure what's gonna happen for Easter. Aimee mentioned something about biting the heads off of hollow bunnies and filling them with booze? Hmm.

The Wonder Years

Man oh man, was I delighted last night. We're talking de-light-ed. I was flipped through trying to figure out if the new season of the Bachelor was on (I was in the mood for some gross gooshy tv (when am I not?)) and I passed through channel 12.. to my surprise and delight, I saw that my favorite show of all time The Wonder Years was coming on at 10.

I texted Hunter about 5 times with various forms of "holy shit! Wonder Years!" until he finally replied "you really love the Wonder Years, huh?"

UH YES.

When I was a kid I secretly wrote I <3 F.S. on the bottom of a board game box. I watched religiously. I wanted to name my future daughter Lisa after one of Kevin's crushes who I was particularly envious of. I sobbed during the final episode. I've spent the last few years praying that it would finally be released on DVD. I'm one step away from being like that Ninja Turtle fanatic from that YouTube clip. Sorta.

The thing is, The Wonder Years remind me of being a kid. Not only in my own life, but universally. Those struggles are everyone's awkward struggles. The show had a sense of humor and was always honest. Even watching last night, as Kevin and Winnie met by the trees to try and "make out," something in my head went back to my own experience in 5th grade.. meeting by the big rock behind the school to kiss Josh Mitchell. We shuffled our feet. We both stammered out "ihavetogocatchthebus""ihavetogotogymnastics." And that was it. I'm convinced that has everyone has had those little moments.. and I love Wonder Years for reminding me how funny they are.

Uh

Last night was weird. Real weird. All the way through. After stuffing my face with pasta, brie and Sparks at Laura's, I hopped across the street to Great Scott to dj the sold out Plan with Drag the River, Owen and Rocky Votolato.

Drag the River was without a band, so it was a solo acoustic set. I was itchin for something to happen, but my dj set only lasted two songs before Owen was up. His set was cut short by a broken string and an odd sound system malfunction. I was back at bat. I was bored. I wanted to play songs to soothe my anxiousness.. not so fast. Suddenly GS was turned into karaoke. Journey. Fergie. I was confused and slightly annoyed. It was packed but the night was a staggering slow pace. Stephanie and Joshua from Jane were there. Heather was working her charm (working for a job.) The Blood Brothers showed up. Apparently S & J were following the band for a story. More beer was downed. Apple shots. Rocky came on.

Owen and DtR backed RV and he pulled his brother Cody onstage for a few songs. It was all over by 12:45am. Carl was up.

Heather convinced me to head to Chinatown to a loft party that we had heard about (thanks Vicki.) After lecturing our cab driver for getting us lost, we headed up to the fourth floor of 25 Edinboro.. I don't know why I was in Chinatown at 1am, but I was. There was a spread of wine and booze and warm beers. Dance music. A swing hangin from the ceiling. We stashed beers in the freezer to get them cold. We danced. I waited for someone to launch through the window from the swing. Or bust their head. Neither happened. I admired the large aloe plant. Hunter and Nate finally showed up and there was more dancing. We sat on the couch and Hunter said sweet things to me. It got late. The lights turned on and I found the hostess and thanked her for the good time.

After the party died out we grabbed some 3:30am scallion pancakes and cabbed it home.
